WHO IS IN CONTROL?

A contemplative piece of writing and reflection on the nature of mind, and how to be authentic

An invitation to read the following slowly, not in the way one reads data for information collecting, but with a contemplative mind that evokes curiosity, and the possibility of learning something about oneself. Not as a goal to get anywhere, but merely for the love of learning.

Encouragement to activate your non-judgemental loving awareness

[proceed to contemplation]

Who’s in control?

You or your mind?

“The mind is a beautiful slave, and a horrible master.”

I’ve created a separation between you, and your mind.

Definitions are helpful here… many people mean many things by the term mind.

Mind, in the context I am using it refers to the personal and conscious mind that ordinarily operates through most experiences in the day-to-day undertakings

Mind is difficult to define because its borders are not real

There is also what is termed the Great Mind or Universal mind, which is an impersonal mind, the cosmic mind….this mind is not as rooted in the personal perspective of a limited bodymind, but rather is a more inclusive or objective mind of creation.

Within the personal mind with which we will be discussing there are various levels above and below

Below the conscious mind is the personal subconscious mind, an underlying architecture of programmed patterns, habits, phobias, fears, attractions, aversions, etc., that filter energy and information into the personal conscious mind of current exploration.

There are yet deeper layers that influence your subconscious and conscious mind, such as the unconscious which harbours archetypal energies

In order to work with this material, it is not necessary to understand the depths of the subconscious mind or the heights of the universal or superconscious mind.

Yet, it is good to contemplate the various levels of organization and influence that effect your mind

For our present purposes we will be exploring the personal and conscious mind, and some of its influences, and a place I will term the center or source of your being.

An opportunity for contemplation:

Is there anything without a center or source?

Pause, and let the mind explore.

Come to silence, then return to the question and look deeper.

These contemplations seek not to answer, but to exercise the capacity to look deep into the nature of existence…of your existence.

[transition]

Please follow along

Let’s set up a relationship between what is you and your personal and conscious mind, and your center or source.

In order to follow further I am going to make some assumptions, please read them and assess if they feel resonate or truthful in your body.

At your center, is your source.

Your center is not an abstract term…at the center of what you are, within and inside, there is a source of life.

Pause to contemplate

[further]

The source of your life is at the center of your being and body …and like a seed your growth and expression is an inward expression moving out word

Creation, or the external universe may sustain and reflect your body and mind, but the center is your source.

-at this point, I may have diverged in a direction that is not resonate with your truth.  It does not matter which direction one goes, please follow along-

[continue]

So then, the source of your life, body, and mind is to be found at the center of your being.

Assertion (assess for validity): at a basic level, you are energy

Making the language as simple as possible, at a fundamental level the movement of your mind and body can be described in terms of energy, vibration, and information.

Therefore, the energy of actions can be sourced from one of two directions….

The energy of your actions can be a reaction to an external energy

Or the energy of your actions can be sourced from your center

[breakdown]

When the energy of our actions is sourced from an external source, the world outside of us determines how we act and respond.  Various energies outside of ourselves that influence our energy are the opinions of others, external pressures such as social norms, cultural conditioning, fears, external conditions such as weather, etc. Please think of a few other sources in which the external environmental triggers dictate your decisions, and spend time to reflect on how this effects your decision making

Where is the power when external energy determines internal action?

Find some key examples in your life, in relation to where your at in your growth cycles and in relation to your purpose and dream manifestation…what external conditions and energy is influencing your decisions?

Financial? Societal judgement? Fear? Lack of confidence as a reflection of needing external validation?

The more you work with the above contemplation and the energy it evokes in your body will be of benefit to the process we are on.

[review]

We have just identified where we are at in life with relation to your goal or purpose and named some of the external energies that we perceive are blocking your way forward.

Assertion: All of these perceived external energies of limitation are all within your mind

Therefore, they have no concrete existence outside of your own mind, and since they exist and were created in your mind, your solution to them is not outside yourself, but inside.

Where then is the power in this equation and approach?

[pause]

“you mean to tell me that what stands in front of my dreams is all in my head? Your telling me that I’ve been struggling over X and Y and Z for days/weeks/years and it’s all my fault”

-you feel that? What was that?

“what was what?”

  • ‘it’s all my fault’, what is that?

“a judgement”

  • Yes. That is your mind. The personal mind we are exploring and deconstructing. Let us come back to the introductory invitation to enter into this practice with a non-judgemental and loving mind of observation and exploration.

“thank you”

  • An encouragement to recognize the emotions that arose in your body, where you felt them, and the corresponding effects in your mind.  Let’s take a few deep breaths together, relax the body and come back to the exercise from a place of balance.

[reader: please pause take a few breaths and continue]

The nature of challenge and growth.

This contemplative exercise aims to access the mind and find out who’s in control.

Next, let’s talk about the nature of challenge and relate it back to our process.

Challenge always has an effect in the body.

When we grow we expand from inside out.  The effect is that energy from our center is expanding outward and in all direction (this energy may be in our upper body, lower body, an organ, our spine, our energy field, etc). The process of energy expanding outward will meet a point wherein it approaches its limitation, or the border of expansion the energy of your bodymind has reached up until that point. At the edge of your expansion is a perceived limitation that has thus far been a boundary of what is possible. When we relate it to our dream or purpose, the process is one of creating a vision and moving towards it.  The next effect will be moving forward toward said purpose and consequently we will encounter a perceived limitation in the body or mind (please see your above examples of perceived external energies that limit your creation).  When you encounter a limitation or challenge there will be a corresponding pressure and localized contraction or change in your bodymind, perhaps a resistance to thinking or doing something, a tightness in the gut, or a closing in of the heart.  This is the area where the energy from your center is expanding outward, and the pain, the discomfort, the blocked emotion, the perceived limitation is piece of you that will be opened into and explored, and expanded upon.

That’s a fair bit of information. Please read it over and assess its truth value.

Understanding this basic cycle of growth is important because to master the mind, we must understand the process of the mind, and how to move beyond it to break limitation and perceived blocks.

When we have a direction, say towards our dream, and we have identified the perceived external limitation or belief, then there is an opportunity to turn within to the body and find where the specific holding is.  From here, once everything has been identified, one then turns to tools and techniques of inner development and clearing.  For example, I work with breathwork, movement, and meditation techniques.

Why?

All development, is actually inner development. The breath is the doorway into the body and mind, and not just the personal conscious mind, but the breath allows us to access deeper aspects of the subconscious and superconscious mind. Through the breath we can go beyond the ordinary mind.  Because all blockages and limitations of mind and body have a body based component, moving the body and working with the energy of the body and mind are essential inner tools that are within you to be accessed at any time.

[transition]

We have thus explored the nature of setting a goal, encountering a challenge, identifying the perceived external limitations of the mind, tracing them back into the body, and then we briefly touched upon tools to clear blockages and move forward. This basic cycle is your key to mastering and achieving any goal, because the cycle is always the same, and the mind is predictable. The more you work with going beyond the mind, the clearer you see the mind, and then instead of being a victim to external energy or the nature of the mind, which is sometimes to judge or doubt, or create barriers, then you are empowered and resourced with a capacity to go beyond.

The journey then is to reclaim the energy you have given the mind and direct it towards your dreams. This is the process of empowering yourself and your actions.  It involves dropping the need to be liked, dropping the need to fit in, to succeed on someone else’s terms, it means dropping self judgement, and learning act from your center.

When you are at your center, your energy is an easeful outpouring of your authenticity.  It is not an effortful act, there is secretly nothing easier than being you, it just takes a process of unravelling all the faulty selves we have layered on top of our authenticity to find our intuitive way in the world.  It requires detaching from the mind and the conditioning one has built and learning to trust the inner guidance that is always within us. It is empowering to take your energy back from where it was leaking.  It is a process, be gentle on yourself, once more a reminder to be non-judgemental and loving as you turn within, for how else would you want to enter your innermost garden?  Coming to your center is a coming home, to your source, the same source of all of life.  When connected with source energy you are connected to the energy of creation, that roars like ten-thousand suns.  Clarifying your connection to your source and center creates a bridge between you and the universe, and all beings.

[final meditation]

Allow for 5 minutes.

To complete this contemplation and meditation, sit comfortably.

Take your time to come to silence, a point of stillness in the mind, an inner quite before doing the following.

Become aware of the energy and space in front of you, behind, to the left and right side, above and below. Then find your center.

Sit in meditation or Write

Please repeat the following

I express by authenticity by ……(blank)

Example

I express my authenticity by acting freely

I express my authenticity by being free from fear

I express my authenticity by being honest

Continue on your own

Finish by taking three deep breaths, and letting go into a short meditation
